Google is phasing out support for older browsers from 1 August. Those using IE7, Safari 3, Firefox 3.5 and their predecessors to view Gmail, Google Calendar, Talk, Docs and Sites will then lose some functions.

Eventually, it warned, these web services will stop working for those sticking with older browsers. The move is part of a trend to stop the use of ageing browsers which can be insecure and not sophisticated enough to handle the latest web technologies.

Code malfunction

Statistics on browser versions gathered by StatCounter suggest about 17% need to change in the light of Google’s decision. Google made its announcement in a blogpost saying its engineers were keen to make use of the latest capabilities in browsers, and that required support for HTML5 technology. As a result, from 1 August, Google will only support what it calls “modern browsers”. By this it means the latest versions and major prior releases of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari.

As new versions of these are released, Google will get its web services working with that and then drop support for the third-oldest version. Support in this sense means that Google will only do compatibility testing with more up-to-date browsers. It will make not test with older programmes and can make guarantees that web services will work with them.

In mid-May, Mozilla, which oversees development of Firefox, kicked off a plan to get the 12 million or so people using version 3.5 of its browser to update. It said it was “frustrated” with efforts to get people to upgrade and had taken a series of steps to force change. It used pop-up screens, adverts, re-directs and updates to steer people towards more recent versions of Firefox.Figures gathered by Mozilla suggest the campaign has had some success as the number of users on Firefox 3.5 has now dropped to about one million. Microsoft’s campaign to stop people using Internet Explorer 6 is one of the longest running upgrade efforts. The software giant has used its automatic update system to get newer versions of its browser out to many users. However, many companies prefer not to use this system and that has meant IE6 clinging on in some firms and nations. Globally about 11% of browsers are IE6, suggest figures compiled by Microsoft, and there is a wide variation around the world. About 34% of Chinese net users are on IE6, as are 22.3% of South Koreans and 11.6% of Vietnamese people.

I was made aware that a lot of people still dont understand that this is a scam, designed to alarm the user that another company (generally in the Asian territory) is trying to register domains with the company’s names.

Say one has the domain www.itnews.com.mt – a typical email would contain the below:

Dear CEO / CTO,

We are a professional intellectual property rights consultant organization based in HongKong, we have an important issue to confirm with you.

1. On Apr. 18, 2011, one company named Kring Investment LLC applied for the following Domain Names with our organization.

itnews.net.cn

itnews.tm

itnews.com.sa

itnews.my

itnews.bh

2. During our preliminary investigation, we found that these Domain Names’ keyword is identical with your Trade Mark, this is why we inform you.

3. I wonder whether did you consigned Kring Investment LLC to register these Domain Names with us?

4. If you do not have any relationship with this applicant, we assume that they have other purposes to obtain these Domain Names.

Currently, we have already postponed this company’s application. Please let the relevant principal make a confirmation with me ASAP.

Thanks & Regards,

Angus Luo
Tel : +852 65170 438
Fax : +852 30696 940
E-Mail : angus@bestweb-hk.com
Homepage: www.bestweb-hk.com

The dead giveaway in such a scam was that contacting them to ask for the prices of these domains , they will get back to you with exorbitant domain prices in the range of 400 to 500USD per domain!

Mind you, they do also have a backup plan. If you email them back and let them know that you are not interested, they try to give the last push to make you worry about the safety of your company’s image…

Thank you for your confirmation.

But I have to remind you that maybe they want to use these fields that domains represent to imitate your webpage, use false ads to cheat your clients, or develop an illegal website. Don’t you think what they do will damage your profits? Therefore, I suggest that you should protect these intangible assets, but we won’t demand you to do anything. As a domain name registrar, we have made preparation. We will pass that company’s registration within 48 hours. Once they sucessfully register them, we will not be involved in any problem about intellectual property and trademark dispute. If you still decide to give up these domains, so nothing we can do.

Best regards,

Angus

That does sound scary, but in all honesty – why would anyone bother to go through the hassle of registering an asian domain to represent your company, create a cloned website etc… just to harm your reputation – sounds like a long shot to me.

Solutions:

If you receive such email – delete it immediately, don’t engage in a conversation.

Check the email sender address : if it’s coming from a hotmail, yahoo or gmail address, there’s definately something wrong!

If you are worried about losing such domains, go through a reputable domain registrar and register the domains there.

In February, a school district in Pa had been accused of remotely activating the webcams on school issued laptops and taking pictures of students in their homes without the student or parents knowing it. More details have now surfaced in the case.

According to school board president David Ebby, “a substantial amount” of photos of students at the school have been recovered. According to the attorney for student Blake Robbins, school officials had taken over 400 hundred screen shots and images of him alone.

The attorney alleges that thousands of images have been taken with the knowledge or consent of the students in the district or their parents. The attorney is seeking a court order to investigate Carol Cafiero’s computer calling her a “voyeur” and believing that she has downloaded images of students to her computer. Cafiero is the district technology coordinator.

No word is out yet on a more user-friendly version (automated) of the hack but given the speed at which this initial feat was accomplished, it’s can’t be far behind.

It is a free, online anti virus that lets you scan files for virues and other malware.

This website is www.virustotal.com. VirusTotal is a service that analyzes suspicious files and facilitates the quick detection of viruses, worms, trojans, and all kinds of malware detected by antivirus engines. This free, independent service features the use of multiple antivirus engines (Which is very important to be able to capture the newest viruses as quickly as possible) and real-time automatic updates of virus signatures. additionally, it also provides detailed results from each antivirus engine.

Internet Security 2010 is just one of many fake antivirus applications like Antivirus Live and Advanced Virus Remover that hold your computer hostage until you pay the registration fee. This is a very abusive method to make you pay to clean up viruses that are not really in your system.

Normally these infections start with a popup message coming from a rogue site or advert—and they are often served up from porn/warez/torrent sites, though these viruses are not exclusively from there.

The First Step:

The first thing we have to do is to kill this annoying software that’s currently running on the system, and there’s a really easy way to kill Internet Security 2010 without downloading any special software just to kill it.

Open up the Start menu, click the Run button (you can also use the Win+R shortcut key or insert the command in the search area in the Windows 7 start menu), and then type in the following:

taskkill /f /im is2010.exe

Hit the Enter key, and the main virus window should go away. After you’ve done that, you’ll want to quickly execute the following commands:

taskkill /f /im winlogon86.exe
taskkill /f /im winupdate86.exe

At this point the virus isn’t currently running on your system—but it’s still lurking in the shadows, but you can actually run any malware removal tools that you’d like. You should note that at this point, if you restart your computer, the virus will re-activate, and you would need to go back and re-apply the steps above to kill the software again.

Permanent Removal:

Once you apply the temporary fix above, you need to remove the actual malware from the system by downloading SUPERAntiSpyware and installing it. Once the software is installed, then click the Scan Your Computer button… make sure to perform a Complete Scan, and select all of your drives. Once the scan is finished, you can delete all the spyware found and finally getting rid of Internet Security 2010!

By default, on Windows Vista and Windows 7, whenever you are prompted with a UAC dialog the entire screen turns dark and the computer seems to freeze completely. This is done on purpose (Not a bug) to prioritise the importance of this window. During this period, the rest of the screen is un-usable, meaning that you cannot run any other program or access any other location on your PC until you overcome the UAC. This is called Secure Desktop mode and prevents the execution of malicious code (if any). It also prevents some remote desktop applications from accessing the dialog box and that in itself makes it more secure. (Thanks for the tip Tim) However for some users, this temporary darkened screen is annoying, and some people would rather get rid of it… Here’s how to do it.

Note: You must be logged in as an administrator to accomplish this.

You can accomplish this in the following way:

1) Open Local Security Policy Editor (Right click on Computer, and click on Manage) and expand Local Policies \ Security options branch in the left pane.

2) Navigate to the option User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation and double click it as shown above

3) Select the dot Disabled to turn off Secure Desktop or prevent screen from freezing when prompted by UAC

4) Click OK button

5) Close Local Security Policy Editor
